a little about us
First International Baptist Church is a church born out of need. Our City, served as a refuge for many of our members. It was our first taste of America. Like many first generation Asian Immigrant churches, FIBC had it’s original roots established as a Lao Baptist Community. As time went on, the need evolved and other people groups, refugees from all over the world, found Memphis as their home. From there the natural progression from a mono-immigrant church to an international multi-ethnic church took place. FIBC had the direct opportunity to serve those who were establishing life in the US, by helping them build community and bond with other people groups, at the same time walking them through the journey of getting to know Christ personally.
With over 21,000 Asian Americans in the Memphis metro area, it’s understandable that a sense of community is difficult to establish. Asian Americans in the Memphis Area are unique in that there is no central gathering place. But, where we find obstacles Memphians groom “Grit.” We understand the geographical obstacles and seek to be that gathering place for Asian Americans. Our home location is in the central part of Memphis (200 East Parkway N), near some of our favorite eat spots (Phuong Long, Mulan Asian Bistro, DWJ, Sushi Jimmi’s, One’ Poke’, just to name a few). But where we meet for worship and where do life is spread throughout the city. Many of our church life happens in our homes where we build local community. As Asian Americans, time in our homes together and eating together is a natural part of who we are. We want to extend that with the love that comes from Jesus.
First International Baptist Church will remain a truly international body of believers with nations represented from many corners of the world. Although many of our members represent different cultures, our roots are ultimately in Christ Jesus and our earthly home is Memphis. #choose901

The needs of our city presented itself and FIBC answered the call. Now we look toward our city’s need today. Many 2nd generation Asian Americans call Memphis home. Being children of refugees or immigrant families, many have acclimated into American culture. [2nd generation Asian American’s are a part of the third culture phenomenon or TC. The term TC came around when children of missionaries would be raised in foreign countries. Those children would have experienced cultural norms that were different from America and upon return, would struggle with self identifying with either culture. Many Asian Americans naturally struggle with culturally identity, being raised in an minority cultural home and wrestling with majority culture. FIBC is church home for those individuals.] So with that distinct background, FIBC seeks to serve the community of Asian Americans and be empowered to build community within the context of Memphis, our home.

That brings us to our mission: Our mission is to continue serving Jesus from our unique context and lens. We believe that community is distinctly engrained in what it means to be a body of Christ. So it is our mission to openly invite all into community with Jesus, other believers, and into the world.
